England manager Gareth Southgate admits he's relieved that Jordan Henderson has left the riches of Saudi Arabia and returned to European football.

Henderson, 33, quit Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq to join Dutch giants Ajax in January, and Southgate took a trip to Amsterdam on Saturday to watch his debut. His decision was met with criticism, though, as some believe that Southgate should've been watching a Premier League game instead, not solely a player who's been an ever-present during his seven years in charge of the Three Lions.

One top-flight player pushing for a call-up is Manchester United wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo, who Southgate says he'll continue to "monitor." Speaking after England discovered their opponents for the 2024-25 Nations League, a tournament which the 53-year-old might not even be in charge for, Southgate was asked about Henderson's recent move and Mainoo's spectacular emerge.

"It's easier to assess someone playing in a European league," Southgate said of the ex-Liverpool captain. "For Jordan, I think he'll be excited about the game the other night - a derby atmosphere, playing in a game where firstly the club are absolutely delighted to have him there. He's had a really warm welcome and been really well received, and I'm sure that will mean a lot to him.

"I think Mainoo is doing brilliantly for a young player. He's had an excellent start for Manchester United. I'm not certain he's necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such. He's quite a progressive player, but he's had a fabulous start to his career and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward."

Mainoo, who's just 18, has become a regular starter for United, exciting fans ahead of a potential first England call-up when the Three Lions host Brazil and Belgium at Wembley next month in a pair of friendly clashes. However, African giants Ghana are reportedly attempting to prise the cool-headed midfielder away from representing his home nation, as he's also eligible to play for the Black Stars through both of his parents, although he was born and raised in Stockport.

Southgate has the opportunity to watch Mainoo in action when United travel to face Aston Villa on Sunday. Established England stars Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford are also in line to feature.
