A NEW Netflix true crime documentary will explore the story of how a  twisted ‘’love triangle’’ resulted in the death of Cari Farver in November 2012.

Here we take a look at who Cari Farver was, what happened to her, and who was found responsible for her death.

Who was Cari Farver?

Cari Farver was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska, who was romantically involved with a man named Dave Kroupa.

The two started dating after a chance encounter at an auto repair shop.

While giving his account of their romance, Dave told ABC: "When we looked at each other, there was a little spark."

"She's showing me something inside the vehicle and we're standing there, and we're very close ... and there was some tension."

The pair embarked on a “hot and heavy” fling, spending almost every night together, although both agreed they were not looking for anything serious.

What happened to Cari Farver?

Around the same time frame, Dave Kroupa was also involved with another woman named Shanna ‘’Liz’’ Golyar, who went by Liz.

On their first date, Dave made it clear he didn’t want to be tied down and he said Golyar accepted the casual nature of the fling.

Shortly after the pair met, Cari vanished without a trace and was registered as a missing person by her desperate mum Nancy Raner.

However, it wasn't until 2015, that the truth of what had happened to her was revealed.

Golyar murdered Cari Farver in November 2012 and spent the next three years impersonating her in thousands of menacing texts and emails sent to their mutual love interest, Dave.

To keep up her twisted ruse, Golyar also sent herself countless disturbing messages, burned down her home, killed her dog, and even shot herself in the leg.

She attacked and killed the mum-of-one after witnessing her leave the flat of the man she was dating.

I would say cold would be the best description of her. I never saw any remorse

She then spent years assuming her victim's identity on social media and via emails to try to throw investigators off her trail.

In a post shared to Facebook in May 2013, Golyar posed as Cari Farver to say the reason why her son Max could not see his mum was because he refused to run away with her.

"I asked my son Max... to come with me, but you didn't want to," it read.

She also sent a message to Cari's mum on Mother's Day 2014, leading the family to still believe and hope that she was alive.

However, when the case was taken over once more, bank statements revealed that, other than two transactions in the days following her disappearance, Cari’s account had not been used.

Her apartment was also full of her clothes and possessions - there was no sign of any packing up in preparation for a move.

It was following this discovery that police were met with a huge breakthrough in the case.

Jim, from the Pottawatomie County Police Department, who asked to be put on the case after a neighbouring force failed to find her, told The Sun: ‘’When we went back to the original case file, we looked at downloads from Liz's phone and we found a picture of Cari's vehicle.

“The metadata showed the picture was taken on Christmas Eve 2012.

“Cari vanished on November 13 and law enforcement didn't recover her vehicle until January 2013. So how did Liz know where the vehicle was? That was a huge one.

“That led us to compare fingerprints we found on a mint box in the vehicle - which matched Liz's known print.”

Cari's body has never been found, however, investigators did recover images of her remains from a device owned by Golyar.

It is believed the mum was stabbed to death near her home in Omaha, Nebraska, on November 13, 2012, and later disposed of.

What happened to Liz Golyar?

A year after they started investigating Golyar, authorities arrested her on a first-degree murder charge on December 22, 2016.

In 2017, Golyar was handed a life sentence three months after being found guilty of first-degree murder in Omaha, Nebraska.

Jim told of how Golyar, who has never admitted the murder, came across as “selfish” and “cold.”

He added: ‘’She seemed very absorbed in her own life and the thing she wanted.

“I would say cold would be the best description of her. I never saw any remorse. I never saw any care that not only has she taken somebody off this earth, but she'd also ruined a mother's life and a son's life because of this too.

“She's never admitted to any of this. She's never taken responsibility for this so I can only speculate what her motive was and I do think it was a selfish obsession with Dave.

“She has kids herself and she didn’t care about what she did to a whole other family.”
