The final episode saw Dr Nikki Alexander and Jack Hodgson track down the King's Cross serial killer.

In grisly scenes during the previous episode the pair discovered eight bodies entombed underground at King's Cross Station Museum.

After their first suspect turns out to be one of the victims, the forensic investigators are forced to go back to the drawing board.

Nikki and Jack split up to follow different leads, and eventually discover who the killer is, but a little too late.

The murderer gets tracked down and shot by a corrupt cop whose parting words are: "You're a monster, but you're my monster."

The policeman then gets arrested himself.

In a shock twist, Jack goes to visit Nikki under the pretense of answering an ad she put out looking for a lodger.

He presents her with an evidence bag, but when she opens it, there is a little box with a ring inside.

The forensic scientist turns to his colleague, saying: "I can’t imagine a day without you, I can’t. Will you marry me, Nikki?"

Speechless, she kisses him, accepting the proposal with a passionate embrace.

Although fans were touched by the engagement, many hit out at the last installment of the crime drama, complaining that the final storyline made no sense.

One person slammed the lack of attention to detail, writing: "Hang on #SilentWitness … what about the bloke in Russell’s house he was caring for (his dad)? Did he just evaporate? Is he dying of starvation in his bed?… bl**** awful plot gap."

Another questioned: "Sorry, that #silentwitness didn't make sense. If Carl hadn't told Keith that he'd happened to kill eight people in King's Cross, why would Keith have needed to bump off Russell??"

A third asked: "Anybody else totally confused by #SilentWitness ?? But I keep watching!"

Yet another railed: "A garbled final episode of Silent Witness, so many plot holes and bizarre bits. Only sensible bit was the proposal at the end. Next series, please!"
