NEWCASTLE are keeping tabs on Atalanta’s Ederson as boss Eddie Howe scours the market for midfield reinforcements.

A loan move for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips is proving tricky so chief scout Steve Nickson watched the Brazilian in action for Atalanta on Monday night.

But the Serie A side have told Toon they have no intention of selling the 24-year-old this month.

And with money tight at St James’ Park due to FFP restrictions, the Magpies may look at resurrecting a deal in the summer if they can’t bring the Italians to the negotiating table in January.

Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley and Sean Longstaff are the only midfielders available to boss Howe, with Joelinton, Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson all injured while Sandro Tonali is serving a 10-month ban for betting offences.

Ederson played for Cruzeiro and Corinthians in Brazil before moving to Italy in 2022, scoring 7 goals in 64 games for Atalanta.

Newcastle have slipped to tenth in the Premier League amid their injury crisis.

Last time out Howe's side lost a belter 3-2 to Manchester City at St James' Park.

The defeat was their fourth in a row in the Premier League.

Although they did gain some respite by beating Sunderland 3-0 in the FA Cup during that run.

Newcastle will hope that the FA Cup can provide another boost next weekend.

The Toon are set to travel to Fulham for a fourth round clash.

After their cup duties, Newcastle will finally return to Prem action on January 30 when they head to Aston Villa.

The following Saturday they will then host Luton at St James' Park, looking to get back on track.
