BBC Radio 2 show host explains absence after 'rapid spiral' in health

Owain Wyn Evans has teased that he's now "fighting fit" after having been absent from his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show earlier this week due to him not "feeling too well".

The presenter, 39, fronts the station's Early Breakfast Show during the week but was absent on Monday morning. Owain didn't make an introduction at the beginning of the show like he usually does and music instead just played.

He however was back at the helm on Tuesday and took the opportunity to thank listeners for their support following his absence the previous morning. Owain also spoke about the circumstances of his absence from the BBC Radio show.

Owain shared: "Normal service is resumed. If you listened yesterday you may have detected that I was absent from the airwaves most of the show but I am back and fighting fit." He later added: "Lovely to be back after my brief absence." He further told listeners this morning: "Thank you so much for your lovely messages about yesterday."

The radio host went on to discuss his absence from the show - which was formerly hosted by Vanessa Feltz - earlier this week. Sharing his experience, Owain said: "Well, I've never been on a detox right but I do feel like some people would pay good money for [...] what I went through yesterday. I'm not gonna go into too much detail but this is how things unfolded."

"I went to bed. I wasn't feeling too well. Got up once in the night, was ill ... then y'know immediately felt better. D'you know when you kind of think 'oh thank goodness it's gone' and you feel like whatever that was it's not there anymore? Went back to sleep, woke up [and] felt okay," he added.

Owain said that after arriving into the studio in Cardiff there was a "rapid sort of downward spiral of wellness" around ten minutes before his radio show was scheduled to begin. He shared: "I was sort of overheating and I left the studio."

He continued: "I was not fine and I went to the toilet right and I was so hot I took my jumper off and I lay on the cold tiles of the toilet floor to cool down quickly and it was at that stage I thought 'I don't think I can do the show'."

The presenter thanked his producers Georgie Kemp Walker and Kayleigh Hughes who he said "spun some great tunes" in his absence. He also expressed gratitude to Zoe Ball who "came in a bit early" for her subsequent breakfast show.

Owain had previously referenced his absence on Instagram. He took to the platform on Tuesday morning for example to confirm that he was back in the studio. Alongside a selfie, he wrote to fans: "Back in the Broadcasting Boudoir."

He had posted a photo of his living room on Monday and wrote that he was having a "sick day". He said at the time: "Sofa sick day sleeping and dipping in and out of Desperate Housewives. Feeling lots better and thank you [Georgie and Kayleigh] for looking after me and to the lovely [Zoe] for starting her show early. Back tomorrow darls."
