Charlton had twice fought back to be level in the game before they went down to ten men when Tayo Edun was sent off the 86th minute.

Northampton then put the final nail in the coffin for Appleton with a 97th minute Louis George Appere winner.

Following the game Charlton took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce Appleton had been sacked.

A statement on their website said: "Charlton Athletic can confirm that Michael Appleton has left the club with immediate effect after being relieved of his role as Head Coach.

"The club would like to thank Michael for his efforts during his time in charge."

The announcement on X was posted at 10:15pm, roughly 30 minutes after their game against Northampton.

Appleton, 48, signed a two-year contract to become manager on September 8, 2023 to succeed Dean Holden.

The defeat leaves Charlton languishing in 16th in the table.
