The autopsy, which was published on the X, formerly Twitter, account of a supposed retired Los Angeles sheriff's detective, claims that the Nirvana singer used a shotgun on himself.

A large mixture of drugs, including heroin and traces of Valium, were found in the singer's system, according to the leaked report.

Cobain struggled with heroin addiction and chronic depression in the years leading up to his death.

The U.S. Sun has not verified the authenticity of the report.

Cobain's autopsy was never officially released at the time due to a Washington state law that requires autopsies to be kept confidential.

The Nirvana frontman was 27 years old at the time of his death.

A suicide note was found near Cobain's body, which was addressed to his imaginary friend Boddah and contained messages to his wife, fellow musician Courtney Love, and daughter, Frances Bean.

The note was read during the public memorial service by his wife, according to Rock Celebrities.

“…Thank you all from the pit of my burning, nauseous stomach for your letters and concern during the past years," began the final lines of the note.

"I’m too much of an erratic, moody baby!

"I don’t have the passion anymore, and so remember, it’s better to burn out than to fade away."

Cobain referenced Neil Young's My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue) in the final line.

His death came at the height of his fame, something Cobain struggled with after the rock band exploded into the spotlight in the late 1980s.

Nirvana achieved global success with the release of their smash single Smells Like Teen Spirit.

A month before his death, Cobain attempted suicide on March 3, 1994, while in Rome after mixing champagne and Rohypnol.

When mixed with alcohol or another drug, Rohypnol can cause severe sedation, unconsciousness, slow heart rate, and suppression of respiration that can result in death, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency.

After Cobain's death, his cousin Beverly, a registered nurse, rededicated her life to learning about and teaching suicide prevention, according to Health Day.

In a 2013 interview, she revealed insights into the Cobain family that may have attributed to the grunge rocker's death.

"Alcoholism runs rampant in the Cobain family, she stated.

"When I was growing up there was always alcohol and violence in our home.

"This was also true in Kurt's home, so it isn't surprising that he would turn to alcohol and other drugs to ease any kind of discomfort."

Beverly also revealed that Cobain was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) at a young age, and bipolar disorder later in life.
