Emilia Fox was back leading the gang as Dr. Nikki Alexander in the episode which fans left insisting would give them "nightmares".

Alongside Jack Hodgson, played by David Caves, the pair were stunned to discover the body of a woman in her flat a year after she had died.

The programme went on to broadcast the scenes of the mummified body in plain sight which left many BBC viewers aghast.

It included close-up shots of the corpse and its individual body parts.

In the scenes, the pair found the body decomposed on the bed as they quickly tried to establish who it was.

Dr Nikki said: "Do we know who it is?"

DI Torries answered back: "Not yet, we got an anonymous call a few hours ago. A would-be burglar that got more than he bargained for."

Establishing the length of time the body had been there, DI Torres went on to add: "The flat seemed undisturbed, nothing to suggest any trouble."

Reacting in horror at the shocking scenes, fans flocked to X - formerly Twitter - to give their opinion.

One pleaded with the show to axe scenes of the dead as they penned: "Wish they wouldn't show dead bodies. Ugh."

Another went on to add: "Ooh, this is a gruesome one."

A third went on to share: "I'm gonna be having b****y nightmares about that body."

Someone else shrieked: "Stop showing that gruesome body!"

Upon the body undergoing pathological tests, initial tests appeared to suggest it was a lady by the name of Paula.

However, other results differed as they appeared to confirm it was in fact somebody else.

Viewers will have to tune into the next episode of Silent Witness where the mystery surrounding the body and what happened to it are uncovered.
