Spring is the perfect time to bring life to your garden, and planting these flowers now will guarantee impressive blooms in a few weeks.

There are loads of flowers you can plant in your garden during March to be ready for spring without worrying they will wither away. From evergreen camellias to daphnes and hyacinths you can make your garden a colourful place without worrying about the weather. If you are green-fingered and itching to get out into the garden then one expert has shared flowers you could be focusing on now.

David Domoney, a celebrity gardener from Love Your Garden and expert horticulturist, has shared his favourite flowers to plant in March. Sharing a post on his website he said: "Celebrate the first day of spring coming up this month by planting a selection of spring beauties to brighten the dullest of days."

Camellias

Camellias are evergreen and are easy to grow and the gorgeous flower blooms in white, pink or red. The flowers are quite hardy but will thrive best planted in a sheltered area of the garden which protects the plant from cold winds while giving it plenty of sunlight in the morning.

David said: "[These are] best planted in front of a wall to protect them from the harsh elements and do make sure the soil around them stays reliably moist as dry roots in the summer can adversely affect their flowering the following year."

Daphnes

Daphnes are a very popular flower, especially because they are low maintenance, but they are known for their beautiful scent. These flowers are also very good for the local environment and are known to attract bees and other pollinators. It’s best to plant these flowers in partial shade such as near paths or doorways in alkaline soil, but they will also do best in a warm yet sheltered area.

David explained: "The joy of this plant is that its pretty, violet, lilac-pink flowers appear as early as February and is one of the earliest daphnes to flower. The scent is exquisitely sweet, making it a delightful cut flower."

Hyacinths

Hyacinths are popular and can grow in most soils, as long as they are placed in a position where they can get the full sun. These flowers are known for their distinctive pink, blue and purple blooms and are also a flower with a wonderful scent.

The expert revealed: "Few can resist the charm of a heavily scented hyacinth and this cultivar is no exception with its gorgeous, fragrant dark, maroon-purple flowers. Planted en-masse towards the front of a spring flower border, it looks and smells magnificent."

Elephant Ears (Bergenias)

Bergenias, also called Eroicas or Elephant Ears, are a vibrant plant with beautiful bright flowers and are known for their thick glossy green leaves. These flowers can survive in both the sun or shade and even poor soil conditions but need to be placed somewhere dry. Constantly wet soil will lead this plant to rot and prevent blooms.

David said: "These tough, evergreen plants are fantastic for suppressing weeds and perfect for edging a border. Eroica is taller than most other elephant’s ears cultivars, producing sprays of rich, deep-pink flowers on red stems from late winter until late spring."
