A 40-YEAR-OLD Peugeot 205 has sold for an incredible £227,250.
It was thought the motor could sell for £300,000 at auction, but the winning bid has come in far below that sale.
What makes this particular car so valuable is that it is number 176 of 200 of the 'Homologation Specials' editions made by Peugeot.
The virtually unused speedster is a 'Turbo 16' iteration launched for just £6,245 in 1984.
It was once described as "a rare and sought after jewel for automotive collectors and enthusiasts".

The Peugeot 205 was a staple of British roads in the 1980s.
The £220,000 motor, which has less than 10,000 miles from new, has now achieved a new UK auction record.
Mechanically, the T16 is a different beast to the regular 205, boasting a tuned and turbocharged petrol engine mounted in the middle of the car with power sent to all four wheels.
Iconic Auctioneers say of the Silverstone Circuit sale: "It's a rare and sought-after jewel for automotive collectors and enthusiasts and capable of a blistering 137mph.
"Understandably there was a lot of interest in this car both in the room and online, but it was a telephone bidder who secured the winning bid.
"Capable of a blistering 137mph, it shares nothing with the mass-production 205 except the windscreen, doors and headlamps and mechanically it is completely different, most notably its mid-engined and 4-wheel-drive layout.
"The fact that it was shaped and named to be a 205 member was purely to promote the sales of the mass-production car."
This comes as a grandma-of-six won a Lamborghini worth £190k through a prize draw.
Retired seamstress Wendy Bailey from Mexborough, Yorkshire, scooped the luxury SUV in the Best of the Best (BOTB) competition, as well as a huge cash prize.
