Evra makes demand on Rashford's behalf despite clear Erik ten Hag remark

Patrice Evra has called on Manchester United to pay Marcus Rashford "what he wants" as they look to tie him down to a new deal.

The forward is in the form of his life, scoring in successive games in what has been a record-setting run. Written off by some last season as his form and confidence nosedived, Rashford is now leading United's attack and is on course to register his best season in front of goal.

He is doing so with his future still not secured. The Red Devils want to keep Rashford long-term, but there is interest from elsewhere, namely PSG. The club had introduced a cap on wages that wouldn't see any player earn more than £200,000 a week, but Evra has urged them to open the chequebook.

He told Betfair: "Man United should give Marcus Rashford what he wants in contract talks - he's future captain. Every week Rashford is performing. I have to say congratulations to him, I'm really proud of him. He's smiling and that's the key. I've always said that he will become the captain of the club one day.

"For Ten Hag, Rashford is his main man. His project, his ambition, he's still young, he's fresh and you can see that he is the priority for Ten Hag and that's why he's urging Rashford to sign a new deal with United. He's got that Mancunian mentality and now he's fixed his happiness.

"For me, the biggest priority for Man United right now is to keep that kid happy. So, give him the contract he wants because he's the future of the club. It's simple. He's proved himself this season, he's in the form of his life, but we've always known that he can perform like that. Keep him happy and build a team around him. That's what I'd be doing if I was United."

Ten Hag has already stated the need to keep hold of the forward. The Dutchman has been largely backed by the club's board and he aired his views last week, where he made it known that the club need to retain his services if they want to continue moving in the right direction.

He said: “I think he understands Man United is his club, that’s first but also, in this environment, in this team, I think he is playing his best football. He is improving and that is about him because he’s working on the good things. He is giving 100 per cent energy in it and he has a good plan and I think also in this team he can bring his qualities.

“So this team can help him be in the right position and to score goals, which he is good at. This team is constructed that his qualities come to the fore and I think he knows that. But, definitely yes, he is important for us and if we want to get the success we want – we need him.”
