While Sally, 52, returned today, Jon, 53, was still nowhere to be seen, with Ben once again stepping into the breach.

The pair covered a range of topics including the Government's new funding for nurseries.

Until the end of March, parents were entitled to 30 hours a week of free childcare for children aged three and four.

From April, parents with children aged two are also entitled to 15 hours of free childcare a week.

While the Government says it will benefit 150,000 children, BBC Breakfast reported that people in the industry said it will still not be enough to meet demand, and there is a shortage of places.

Sally spoke to Education Minister Gillian Keegan about the subject, but things became tense very quickly, with the journalist having to interrupt on a number of occasions.

The interview left BBC Breakfast viewers divided, with some branding Sally "rude" for talking over the MP.

Taking to X - formerly Twitter - one wrote: "@sallynugent
wouldn’t let her get her point across! And anyway why is it the government’s responsibility to pay for childcare? Sally was rude and
@GillianKeegan kept her cool."

Another added: "@sallynugent without doubt the worst interviewer on TV. That interview with @GillianKeegan on @BBCBreakfast was a disgrace.

"Constantly interrupting & totally unprofessional. Hasn’t a clue how to structure a debate & only wants her own point to be made. Typical
@BBCOne garbage."

Meanwhile a third tweeted: "Sally, please stop talking over the person you are interviewing. I can't hear either of you."

But other's disagreed, with one writing: "Challenging anybody repeating a falsehood is not rude - it is her duty."

Another added: "@sallynugent fabulous journalism lovely to see the
@BBCBreakfast doing what it always did."

A third tweeted: "Well done @sallynugent for not letting Keegan off the hook."

Meanwhile a fourth shared: "@sallynugent on @BBCBreakfastwell done for keeping @GillianKeegan under control, and bringing in that viewer’s letter."

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
