Todd Boehly believes his Chelsea project will come good once their £1bn of new signings get more time to gel.

And the chairman, who has recently been criticised by supporters unhappy with the team’s struggles on the pitch and a perceived disconnect off it, says he understands the criticism and frustrations. But, in a wide-ranging profile interview for Forbes magazine, the investor says the Chelsea owners’ vision for the club is not for changing.

“We just need to let the process develop and give them the time to go from being unbelievable individual players with great skills to fold into a team,” Boehly said.

“The good news is people care so much. And the bad news is people care so much. That leads to times when they’re frustrated with the team and the owners. I get that, but we just have to continue to stay the course.”

Boehly, who co-owns the club alongside Clearlake Capital and Swiss businessman Hansjorg Wyss, counts the dominant baseball franchise LA Dodgers and their basketball neighbours Lakers among his other sporting interests.

And while Chelsea are yet to mirror the success of those outfits, he underlined the clear attraction for American businessmen to invest in the Premier League lies in its broadcasting market.

“The Premier League is broadcast into basically every country in the world. I think North Korea and Russia are the only ones that don’t broadcast it,” Boehly says. “It’s uniquely positioned on the clock in the US because on Saturday morning, there’s not a lot of competition.”

The interview was published less than 48 hours after Chelsea twice threw away a lead to relegation-threatened Burnley at home, with the Clarets also down to ten men.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino, another who has been targeted by unhappy fans, said there were harsh “facts and reality” for his players to accept.

“We need to be more like a team, we need to find better communication, we need to be more competitive,” Pochettino said, before singling out Cole Palmer for praise. “It’s so obvious that he is a good example for the rest,” Pochettino said of Palmer. “From day one he has taken the responsibility. And you see when the team struggles for solutions they give the ball to him.”

Chelsea, who could still qualify for the Europa League and have an FA Cup semi-final later this month, are next in action at home to Manchester United on Thursday evening.
