Rebecca Kenna has admitted she lacks “self confidence” in her response to scathing criticism from Stephen Hendry.

The 35-year-old was partnered with Mark Selby at the World Mixed Doubles in Manchester. They were eventually beaten in the final by Luca Brecel and Reanne Evans.

Kenna was on the receiving end of some criticism from the former World No.1 during the tournament. He was left disappointed that she didn’t attempt to pot a black during the semi-final.

Initially responding, she said: “I heard we got some compliments. I also heard I got some stick for not going for a black because I released the blue instead. But yeah, each to their own.”

Hendry responded to those comments in a viral video. ITV host Jill Douglas said before the final: “Rebecca put you right back in your box there”, to which he replied: “I’m sorry but she’s wrong. She should have gone for the pink or the black.

"All joking aside, if they're going to win this final tonight, she's going to have to be a bit more aggressive with her shot choice.

"The snookers she laid were fantastic, they won the pair that frame. But I'd like to see be just a bit more aggressive with her shot choice instead of trying to be a bit more careful."

Responding to Hendry on Twitter, Kenna claimed that she did not have the confidence to follow his advice. She wrote: “I agree I lack the self confidence to take on shots.

“I didn’t back myself to pot either pink or black & didn’t want to leave them plum in after working so hard to get back into the frame. I play and learn, I’m building confidence from every match. 1 day I may be fearless.”

She also remained full of praise for Hendry amid his criticism. She added: “Of course I take his opinions and criticisms on board he was my hero growing up watching snooker. I’d love to be 100% confident out there but it takes time and experience. Despite my age I am still a rookie out there on the big stage.”

Kenna will be aiming to respond to Hendry’s criticism as she attempts to continue her rise within the game. She has been ranked as high as third in the women’s world rankings. She will take on Alfie Burden in the first round of qualifying for this month’s World Championships next week.
