Motherland star Paul Ready has put the disappointment of the show's axing to one side by landing a new movie role.

Starring in a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet called All That Glitters, the actor has got himself a new job after playing much-loved but dopey Kevin Brady in the hit parenting programme since 2016 Fans are annoyed that we won't be seeing Paul and the rest of the cast on the BBC sitcom again after it was announced there won't be any more episodes.

Premiering on BBC Two, the series which explores the ups and downs of a set of middle-class mums in suburban London has treated fans to three series and two Christmas specials over the last eight years. Bosses called time on the comedy, depriving viewers of further updates from Julia Johnstone and her fellow mum pals. Diane Morgan, who played Liz, a single mum in the show, confirmed over the weekend that Motherland won't be returning.

Motherland, which last aired new content over the 2022 festive period, starred Line of Duty star Anna Maxwell Martin, Lucy Punch, Phillipa Dunne and Tanya Moodle. The three series and Christmas specials followed working mother Julia trying to nativage parenting with the help of other local mothers.

Paul was one of the stars and according to Deadline, he has got a great new role. Written and directed Peter Lavery, All That Glitters is set in a school filled with 'anxious teens and TikTok' - and the actor said: "Peter has written a beautiful script, full of great characters, humour, heartache, humanity and maybe above all – a lot of love," he said. "Something I feel we could all use in these times. I'm very much looking forward to working with him and bringing his wonderful film to life."

Speaking in an interview, Diane confirmed Motherland has ended its run on TV and said: "I hate to say it, because I still get women running up to me with prams in the street asking me when it's coming back." But there might be some good news - Diane hinted that there could be a new show about Amanda, one of the characters from Motherland. She told The Times: "It'll live on through her. The ladies with the prams will be pleased, hopefully." The BBC is yet to comment on the cancellation.

An American version of the BBC comedy had been in the works but was scrapped last year. In June, Deadline reported that ABC had passed on Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, the proposed US remake of Motherland. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie had been due to executive produce and star in the now cancelled show.
