ITALIAN giants Roma welcome Premier League Brighton to the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday for the 1st leg of their Round of 16 Europa League clash.

Roma is in good form, while Brighton have been struggling. This match could hardly have come at a worse time for Roberto De Zerbi’s injury-ravaged squad.

Roma vs Brighton betting preview

Jose Mourinho was sacked as Roma head coach in January, and since then, the good times have returned to the Italian capital.

Under interim head coach Daniele De Rossi, the shackles have been released, and the Italian team are now playing a far more attractive style of football.

Roma are now scoring goals and winning games again. They warmed up for the match against Brighton by putting four past Monza on the road last Saturday.

Finalists of the Europa League in 2023, the Italians are now closing in on the top four of Serie A, and with confidence high, they will also believe they can progress in this competition at the expense of a Brighton team who have hit the buffers in recent weeks.

After a great start to his career in England, Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi has been linked with high-profile roles across Europe this season. But in recent weeks, his team has struggled, with a 3-0 defeat away to Fulham last Saturday, their latest offering.

Injuries have played a part in Brighton’s recent freefall. And it’s difficult to see the Seagulls arresting that slide when they enter the hostile atmosphere of the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. A home win looks very likely.

Roma vs Brighton key stats

  • This will be the first time Roma and Brighton have played each other. The visitors have never played an Italian side before, and this will also be the first time the Seagulls have played a knockout match in Europe.
  • In Daniele De Rossi’s nine matches in charge (all competitions), Roma has won six, drawn two, and lost one. The defeat was to top of the table Inter Milan.
  • Roma has averaged three goals a game in their last three home Serie A matches. In their last five domestic league fixtures, they have netted 16 times.
  • Brighton has won just two of their eight Premier League fixtures in 2024. The two wins came at home to Crystal Palace and away to Sheffield United.
  • In those eight games, the Seagulls have scored 11 times. But nine of those goals came in the wins over Palace and Sheffield, who were both in awful form.
  • Brighton go into the fixture in Rome with a huge injury list. The Seagulls are without Kaoru Mitoma, Solly March, Jack Hinshelwood and James Milner. Joao Pedro is struggling and is unlikely to be risked.

Roma to win

Had this fixture taken place at the end of 2023, things would have been very different. Back then the Romans were in turmoil, while everything at the AMEX was going well. Brighton’s biggest concern back then was who was going to come calling for their in-demand manager.

Fast forward a few months, and things couldn’t be more different. It’s Brighton who are struggling for a result, and the Italians are absolutely flying and loving life.

Brighton will be up for this match. But it is their first-ever experience of knockout football in Europe, and we expect it to be a baptism of fire. Odds of 21/20 on a home win can’t be missed on current form.

Roma to score over 1.5 goals

The doom and gloom has disappeared from the Stadio Olimpico and all of a sudden the goals are starting to flow again.

An attacking front three of Paulo Dybala, Stephan El Shaarawy and Romelu Lukaku is enough to give any defender a sleepless night. But when that trio is firing on all cylinders, sleepless nights for defenders can quickly turn into nightmares.

Dybala has scored seven in eight since De Rossi took charge of the team. And up against a Brighton team that has conceded in 30 of their 37 matches (in all competitions) this season, the Argentine and his fellow forwards will be looking to continue their team’s excellent home scoring record of recent weeks.

⚽ Back Roma to score over 1.5 goals at 10/11 with bet365 ⚽

Romelu Lukaku to score anytime

Alongside the injured Joao Pedro, Romelu Lukaku is joint-second top scorer in the Europa League this season with six goals.

Lukaku looks much happier in Italy than he was in England and seems to thrive in Serie A. The Belgian international is a much-ridiculed figure within English football and would love nothing more than to score against a Premier League club.
