A NEW skincare hack has been doing the rounds on social media - but it’s left hundreds of people repulsed.

According to some, it’s the ultimate way to wake up with a clear complexion if you suffer with acne or get regular breakouts.

Influencer Dani Cole has claimed it is “literally the easiest tip to get rid of acne ASAP”, while Belicia Arnold said it is now a staple in her skincare arsenal.

The hack is swallowing a whole clove of garlic when your skin starts to break out or you feel spots forming underneath.

“To whoever said to swallow garlic to reduce new acne breakouts overnight, I owe you my life,” Dani penned on Instagram.

Belicia echoed this sentiment with a video on her profile, claiming that “swallowing a clove of garlic before bed helps to reduce new acne breakouts, and reduces gas or bloating problems too”.

While there isn't direct scientific evidence specifically linking garlic consumption to improved skin, garlic contains several components that may indirectly contribute to skin health.

However, that isn’t enough to convince everyone to try the skincare hack.

People have feared it will cause “deadly burps” and asked "is it really worth being smelly for two days?”.

“This is so gross,” one sceptic penned. “The thought of how much it would burn makes me queasy.”

“Honestly, I’ll take the acne over the stomach problems this would cause,” another penned.

“No, because your breath will smell like garlic for days and everything you eat will taste like garlic,” a third warned.

Garlic has natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, which may help combat certain skin infections and acne-causing bacteria.

But it’s important to note that while garlic may offer potential benefits for skin health, individual responses can vary.

A number of people have shared the negative impact trying this trend had on their body, noting that it even changed how their skin smelt.

“Tried this for five days for my inflammation,” Sarahanne McCool shared.

“It ended up making me smell very strange.

“Not even from sweating… just like, all the time.

It changed the way my skin smelled, like pungent.

“Stopped and the smell went away but yeah, there are DEFINITELY side effects.”

“I tried this once and it hurt my stomach really bad,” Winfree Hane added.

“It’s hard to digest whole garlic cloves.”

The hack is not recommended by docs either, with many urging people to use researched methods to treat acne or breakouts.

“Garlic is not recommended to treat acne and may actually be irritating to the skin and worsen skin conditions,” Dr Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, told Single Care.

“There is no evidence to suggest that eating garlic necessarily will reduce breakouts.

“Additionally, it is not known how much garlic someone would need to eat in order to reduce cystic acne, so it is not necessarily recommended.”
