The Met Office has put a yellow weather warning for wind in place from 8am until 10pm on Saturday for parts of western Britain and Northern Ireland as the eleventh named storm of the year arrives today.

Heavy downpours are also expected as drivers are urged to avoid coastal areas and higher routes for their own safety. The national weather agency has said that winds may bring damage to buildings with tiles set flying from rooftops causing potential injuries. It may also cause power cuts which may also affect mobile phones. People living near the coast have been urged to stay away from the seafront because of large waves and beach materials being thrown around by the huge winds.

A wind warning is also in place for Ireland by the national weather agency until 8pm this evening - while an orange warning is in place for Mayo and Galway until 6pm. Met Eireann's Deputy Head of Forecasting, Liz Coleman said: "It is the end of the Easter holidays so there will be a lot of people travelling and they may not be expecting such unseasonably strong and gusty winds.

Please make sure to plan your journeys in advance by keeping in contact with the forecast. We are likely to see some trees down due to the saturated soils and strong winds. There will be dangerous conditions at sea too, coupled with wave overtopping and coastal flooding in some areas."
