THE 1% CLUB returned to screens on Saturday night with the latest instalment of the ITV quiz show, but the question left viewers at home seriously “confused.”

Six contestants made it into the final round of The 1% Club this week, an overwhelming large number for the show.

On Saturday night, host Lee Mack welcomed a new group of contestants to test their logic skills on ITV’s The 1% Club.

In a surprise twist, six contestants made it into the final round. They had the choice to split their winnings so far between them or go through to answer the famously difficult 1% question, which only 1% of the nation can get right.

The Question

The 1% question was based on a grid of numbers going in ascending order from 1 to 49.

Based on the position of the squares, host Lee, 55, asked: “Starting on 25, the middle square, SEEN takes you to square 27. From there, NEW takes you to 20. From there, which square does SEWN take you to?

The contestants only had 30 seconds to work out the answer.

The Answer

Out of six contestants, five answered the 1% question correctly. However, one got it wrong.

The first contestant guessed 12 but admitted immediately that she knew she’d made a mistake with her answer.

It was the next contestant who answered correctly, revealing that the answer was 20. The four remaining contestants gave the same answer, which meant they all became members of The 1% Club.

As a result, they split the £94,000 prize, giving each of them £18,800 in winnings.

How did viewers at home do?

Five contestants got the question right, as did several viewers at home.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, ITV viewers were quick to share their thoughts on this week’s 1% question, with one saying: “That must have been the easiest 1% question in series so far.”

However, many viewers found the question, which used abbreviated compass directions, totally confusing.

The answer was 20 because moving one square South, then one East, then West, then North (SEWN) takes you back to the same place you started.

“I was so confused by this question,” one viewer admitted.

Another explained that they also got it wrong, but did understand the premise of the question. “I got it wrong (25) but did know it was to do with compass points,” they explained.

Host Lee previously said that the logical aspect of the questions is why he enjoys the show so much. “That’s what I really like about The 1% Club. Producers shared some questions with me and if I’d been able to get them all right, I probably wouldn’t have done the show. But I quickly realised if someone gets these right, they’re a proper brainbox,” he said.

Lee continued: “Most quizzes use traditional questions, general knowledge style.

“You either know them or you don’t straight away. But what’s good about The 1% Club is the questions are about logic. If you don’t know straight away and your brain is quick enough, you can try to work it out in the 30 seconds you have to answer.

“Intelligence and knowledge can be quite different things — people who aren’t academic can have high IQs and this is more logic-based than just remembering facts. I’m not going to lie, I went through the whole series without getting a 1%. The best I did was a 5% question,” he admitted.
