Danny Dyer has revealed his marriage proposal from his wife was actually an "accident".
The 46-year-old EastEnders star had already been with long-term girlfriend Joanne Mas, 47, for 20 years, after meeting when they were teenagers. Not only that, but the couple also share three kids – daughters Dani Dyer, now 27, who famously won Love Island back in 2018 and Sunnie, 17, plus 10-year-old son Arty.
But after all that time, Jo – who didn’t think Danny believed in marriage – had given up on being asked by the on-screen lothario. So when she went out and bought herself a muffin from Millie’s Cookies on Valentine’s Day 2015, she just wanted a treat for later.
Unfortunately for her – or perhaps fortunately in the end – the muffin had the words ‘Will You Marry Me?’ written on it. After Jo forgot to eat it and went to bed, she was surprised when Danny came upstairs at 3am and excitedly said ‘Yes!”

I went to Millie’s Cookies, bought the last muffin, which said ‘Will You Marry Me’, but I didn’t mean it. It was just the last one there.

“So I thought, ‘I’m going to have that tonight’. Forgot to eat the muffin, left it downstairs, went to bed... He’s come up at three in the morning going, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ And I thought ‘What?’ I was so embarrassed.” Jo then asked Danny: “Are you telling me you weren’t going to propose to me?” He joked: “No I wasn’t going to propose. We got married by accident. What a romantic story.”
Danny and Jo Mas were just 14 years old when they met at school in London's East End. They dated on and off for four years until Jo fell pregnant and issued Danny an ultimatum - make a proper go of it as a family, or leave and don't come back. Having grown up without his own father, Danny chose to stay and be a proper dad to daughter Dani, now 27.
His film career took off in 1999's when he got his breakout role in rave film Human Traffic, and he briefly dated Billie Piper, although it was Jo who he was ultimately drawn back to. But when he cheated in 2000, Jo kicked him out, changed her phone number, emptied their bank account and refused to let him see their daughter.
Both moved on with other people, but when Danny started visiting Dani again, old passions fired up and he and Jo embarked on an 'affair'. Describing how they would 'sneak around like school kids', they decided to give it another go for Dani's sake. Daughter Sunnie was born in 2007, followed by son Arty in 2013, and Danny and Jo eventually made it official by tying the knot in September 2016.
