An American woman was found dead in an apartment in Spain before police arrested her husband.

It’s believed the woman partook in “extreme sex” during her holiday in Spain before she was found dead. The body of the woman, 44, was found in a tourist apartment on Plaza Enrique Garcia Herrera in Malaga on 6 April.

Police were alerted to the unresponsive woman in the Airbnb-style flat in the historic center of the city last Saturday. Spanish officers arrested the woman’s husband, 50, as sources close to the case revealed the woman’s death might have been related to some “extreme sexual practices” the couple were involved in, reports the Daily Mail. The husband was arrested for reckless homicide by Spanish police after the woman’s death.

Local reports describe how the case was initially being investigated as gender-based violence and was then upgraded to homicide. Current evidence suggests the death may have been accidental and due to extreme or risky sexual practices in an “intimate context”.

New procedures carried out by investigators let to detectives believing the events could have constituted sexist violence. Spanish press reported that the man stood before a judge at Investigative Court number 9 of Malaga yesterday. The judge ordered the suspect’s provisional detention without bail.

The case will now be taken by the Violence Against Women Court because of the nature of the case, judicial sources confirmed to La Opinion De Malaga. Medics also attended the flat, but they could only certify the death of the tourist before the National Police then took over the investigation.

The woman’s body has been taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine to undergo an autopsy and forensic study. If the sexist motivation is confirmed, this would be the third death of this kind in Malaga this year alone. The Spanish National Police are currently continuing to investigate the case.
