Santander is giving away free four-year railcards to young customers who open a new bank account this month.

From today, young people between the ages of 20 and 25 can get a free railcard if they open any Santander current account. The offer is not on for long and will only be running until April 30 - so you'll have to be quick.

The high street bank's Railcard gives cardholders a third off train travel across England, Scotland, Wales, and the London Underground when the card is linked to an Oyster card. The railcard usually costs £30 for the year, or £70 for three years. According to Santander, the 16 to 25 railcard savers the average person around £182 a year, meaning a potential average saving of £728 over the four years.

To be eligible for the railcard, you need to aged between 20 and 25 years old on June 30 2024. You will also need to complete an application to open either a new Everyday, Santander Edge, or Santander Edge Up current account before the end of the month and deposit at least £500 into the account by May 14 2024. You can open a bank account online or in a Santander branch.

Santander warned that there was a "limited" number of railcards available, and the offer could be withdrawn ahead of 30 April depending on demand. The high street bank said it would be reviewing applications from May 15 2024 onwards and those who have met the criteria will be emailed codes to redeem their Santander Railcard through the railcard website sent by July 31. The offer is only available to new customers so if you have a Santander account currently you will not be able to get the deal.

Santander’s Edge Up Current Account costs £5 a month to have and offers up to £30 a month from cashback on bills and spending, 3.5% AER in credit interest up to £25,000 on their current account balance, and fee-free spending abroad.

The Santander Edge Current Account, costing £3 a month, offers up to £20 a month from cashback on bills and spending, a linked 7.00% AER easy access saver, and fee-free spending abroad. The Santander Everyday Current Account is simply a basic current account which has no monthly fee. Each of the accounts can be managed online through Santdander's website and mobile banking app.

Andrea Melville, director of current accounts, savings and business banking, Santander said: “With the days becoming longer and promises of sunshine just around the corner, we’re all planning to make the most of spring – whether that’s a staycation, a daytrip to somewhere different, or simply taking advantage of longer evenings with friends. Not only does the railcard give users a third off train travel to get where they want to go, but paired with our Edge and Edge Up current accounts, customers can also benefit from cashback on their travel, as well as on their everyday spending and household bills.”
