An angry Ruben Amorim has denied he is set to take over at Liverpool after reports claimed he was close to an agreement with the Reds.

Amorim has impressed as manager of Sporting Lisbon, who he has led to top spot in the Primeira Liga this season. With Xabi Alonso pulling out of the race to be named Jurgen Klopp's successor, Amorim has taken over as the frontrunner.

On Tuesday, it was claimed that the Portuguese boss had reached a 'verbal agreement' to take over at Anfield this summer. It was thought that Liverpool chiefs had held talks with Amorim earlier this week.

But with his side four points clear at the top of the Portuguese league heading into Saturday's trip to Gil Vincente, Amorim has poured cold water on those claims. Instead, he has insisted that no talks have yet been held.

"Starting with the first question, this is the last time I'm going to talk about my future. There was no interview, much less an agreement, the only thing we all want here is to be champions for Sporting, nothing will change," he said.

"I'm a Sporting coach, there was no interview or agreement with any club, I'm just focused as always on defending my club. As I no longer have anything else to say, there will be no interviews or agreements with the Sporting coach.

"The matter is completely resolved, whether for this or another club. We prepare Gil, we want to win and then we go to next. What makes us most anxious about this game is that we don't really know how Gil will play."

The agent of Sporting's star attacker Viktor Gyokeres has hinted his client could follow Amorim out the door if he leaves this summer. Amorim denied those comments were destabilising to his side.

"The future is with Gil, I'm not going to talk about that, we're always asking the same questions. The objective is to win titles. I can't guarantee that we'll win the championship, so I can't guarantee [he will stay]," Amorim added.

"The appreciation was because we brought together talented players, they help each other, it has more impact than the coach's role. It's worth nothing if we don't finish the season with titles, this is the great appreciation.

"I normally see talented players. Word for scouting, we can find players with great talent and for a lower price. Not the coach, the players, the scouting and the structure. We have of winning titles to value the players.

"That's Viktor, everyone is dependent on the coach, if they don't train well they won't play tomorrow and then they won't play with Famalicão. That's a certainty, not just Viktor, but the future of all the players depends on the coach.

"It's part of a team dynamic. Destabilising? I don't see it that way. We want the players to focus on the game, so be clear about my situation, I think the buzz will end now."
