Jeremy Clarkson has taken his love of country pursuits to a new level, switching horsepower to buy a racehorse.

The presenter of Top Gear, The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm is the new owner of a thoroughbred, a grey gelding who has been named The Hawkstonian, after his brewery.

He is going into training with Cheltenham Festival winner Ben Pauling who is based in the Cotswolds close to Clarkson. The Hawkstonian is not expected to make his debut until the next jumps season, which starts at the end of April.

Clarkson said: “I said to the Hawkstone team that we should get into racing but clearly they got motor racing and horse racing confused!

“That said, Ben Pauling is a stone’s throw from Diddly Squat Farm and the Hawkstone Brewery, so I know where my hay is going. Furthermore, the Pauling family originally farmed our land and taught Kaleb all he knows about farming.”

The Hawkstonian will be syndicated initially to members of Hawkstone’s club and then to prospective owners on an Old Gold Racing waiting list, then offered to the public.

There will be 3,250 shares available at £60 each for a 14-month term.
Ed Seyfried, chief executive of Old Gold Racing, said: “We are honoured to be powering the inaugural Hawkstone Racing syndicate.

“Jeremy has helped transform views of agriculture with his hit television show and we are looking forward to welcoming him on the racing scene this coming season.”

He added: “Most petrolheads start by tinkering with lawnmowers; well, this lawnmower can reach speeds of 35mph over three miles whilst jumping hedges; beat that Flymo!”

Pauling said: “I look forward to educating Jeremy and his Hawkstone members about all things horse racing and I hope The Hawkstonian is as fast as the plug-in hybrid Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale!”

Johnny Hornby, at Hawkstone Brewery, said: “Jeremy said we should get involved in racing, on reflection we obviously screwed up, but we are going to all have a lot of fun with this horse.”
