BBC comedian shares 'absolutely shocking' amount he earned for series on iPlayer

BBC comedian Charlie Higson shared the amount he earned in equity from The Fast Show being on iPlayer and one fan called the sum 'absolutely shocking'.

The actor and comedian, 65, starred in the comedy sketch show alongside Paul Whitehouse, Simon Day, Mark Williams, John Thomson, Arabella Weir and Caroline Aherne from 1994 to 1997. The series was loosely structured and focused on character sketches, catchphrases and running gags.

On Monday, Charlie took to his social media account to share how much he earned between April and December 2022. Mimicking things people have said to him, he tweeted: "'You should make The Fast Show available on iPlayer!', 'Nobody buys DVDs any more', 'You’ll make a fortune!'"

On the pictured invoice, it was revealed he earned a whopping £18.84 from the BBC iPlayer payments. One amused fan took to the comment section to write: "I'm just learning now that it's on iPlayer. Which is nice," to which Charlie responded: "You fell for my indirect marketing."

Another user asked: "Do you have to split that?! Absolutely shocking!" and Charlie answered: "No no. It’s mine! ALL MINE!!!!" One concerned person commented: "That's terrible, I didn't realise how badly they paid. I've also recently realised that buying physical media is also better for the consumer because you don't actually own anything that you've subscribed to on streaming sites."

Earlier this year, it was announced The Fast Show was returning to celebrate its 30th anniversary. It revived some of the most famous characters and catchphrases, including "Suit you, sir!" Paul and Charlie were joined by a host of original cast members including Simon, Mark, John and Arabella.

However, instead of reviving the show as a new BBC series, the cast went on a tour. In an interview, Charlie said: “We’ve had some ideas about using the characters in another format, like the Carry On films, or even a panto, so this tour is just to test the waters.

“But it’s been 20 years since we last did anything on stage and thankfully we all still get along, probably because we’ve allowed each other to do other things outside of The Fast Show. Sleep with other people and the marriage stays strong.” Their final show was performed over the weekend at London's Adelphi Theatre.

The Fast Show had two specials in 2000 and 2014. It featured more than 80 different characters who made more than one appearance, with the majority of them featuring on two huge live tours.
