SHOPPERS are devastated that a beloved high street retailer is set to close its doors for good after 20 years.

Staff at the store have announced its closure to customers, but no official closing date has yet been shared.

The demise of Shoezone in Dundee has caused heartbreak among locals, and they've flocked to social media to share their sadness.

One person said: "How sad. It been a shoe shop all my life", while another wrote: "Shoezone was all we had left."

A third expressed concern for the future of the town, writing: "Going to be a ghost town soon."

A fourth agreed: "There’s gonna be nothing left but coffee shops."

Fears are now growing for the remaining nine stores in Scotland, including the outlet in Glenrothes.

One customer said staff were assuring shoppers Shoezone will remain online and continue to operate branches in England.

He told The Courier Evening Telegraph: “I do feel for the staff.

“The banners for the closing down sale appeared on Friday. Some of the staff were upset.

“It has been there for some time; at least 20 years but I think it’s considerably longer than that.

“I did fear for the store during the height of the pandemic.

“Staff were saying we could still use vouchers and shop online.”

It comes as the closure of Dundee’s Argos branch, which sits in the Overgate shopping centre, was announced last month after serving loyal customers for over two decades.

According to the shopping centre's manager, the firm's execs decided against renewing their lease, and the blow is just another example of Brits' fears that high street shopping is on its way out.

At the time, a spokesperson told The Courier: "We are currently talking to our colleagues in our Dundee Overgate Argos store.

"We have made the difficult decision to close it and are supporting them in every way we can.

"This includes exploring opportunities for colleagues to redeploy within Argos and Sainsbury's."
