A BBC Radio 1 star has been left looking unrecognisable after a painful-looking hair transplant.

Dean McCullough, 32, showed off his bruised and swollen features in a TikTok video, which shocked his legion of loyal fans. However, the Northern Irish presenter insisted the severe swelling was "normal" and shared a before and after shot of his face, claiming he was in no pain at all.

Opening up about his surgery, which moves hair to an area that's thin or bald, Dean declared: "Day 3 of my hair transplant journey and I'm trusting the process, zero pain or major discomfort and apparently the swelling is normal. The swelling should be gone by end of day four and ill be able to wash it on day five. Sleeping is fine, the donor area is fine, I'm putting antiseptic on it and following the aftercare plan."

Dean went onto joke that he now has "cheek bones" as well as teasing he was in his "Avatar era" in reference to the characters in the animated Hollywood film. However, some of his followers were shocked by his appearance as one declared: "OMG it's Dean! I didn't even recognise you. The fact I thought why do I know his voice until I read your name." Another was equally aghast as they exclaimed: "That looks so painful!"

A hair transplant is a procedure to move hair to an area that's thin or bald, and can cost anywhere between £1,000 and £30,000, depending on the extent of hair loss, the type of procedure you have, and the quality of the clinic and its team.

Before deciding to go under the knife - and finding fame on Radio 1 - Dean was a regular star on the Big Brother spin-off Late and Live last year, as well as the Celebrity version in March.

Earlier this year it was announced he'd bagged a role presenting the BBC Radio 1 Early Breakfast Show, after previously fronting the afternoon slot. Speaking about the new job, Dean told listeners: "I'm really excited to be taking over the reins from the amazing Arielle Free. The Early Breakfast crew are the best listeners at Radio 1. I'm really excited to get stuck in and wake up the nation every morning."

Head of Radio 1 Aled Haydn-Jones added: "I'd like to thank Dean for his contribution to making the afternoon show such a success. I couldn't be happier for him as he progresses to his own show on Early Breakfast and warms up the audiences for Greg from Salford from July."

Dean's path to success was not easy as the star admitted he's had experiences with homelessness, spending a year couch-surfing with his family after his parents' relationship broke down.

In a recent issue with the Big Issue, he revealed: 'We weren't living on the street, we were living on my aunt's house on a sofa. I was moving between houses on a regular basis. I have problems with my possessions and feeling like I need to take care of absolutely everything around me. That comes down to moving from house to house and not ever feeling like anything was ever truly mine."
