Jill Douglas admitted things had got “very x-rated” on ITV after Ugo Monye made a cheeky remark in the build-up to England’s Six Nations game against France.

Douglas was the presenter for ITV ’s coverage of the final Six Nations match of the 2024 tournament on Saturday night. She was joined pitchside in Lyon by former England stars Jonny Wilkinson and Monye and ex-France forward Benjamin Kayser.

Kayser set the edgy tone by describing a pass as “erotic” during a pre-match piece of analysis. Douglas then joked: “That’s the first time we’ve heard a pass described as ‘erotic’ on a Six Nations programme! It is late on a Saturday night, so we are fine.”

She then asked Monye about the strength and depth of the French squad, prompting the former winger to talk about weighty players at the home side’s disposal. “It’s absolutely incredible and we saw it last week against Wales – in the final quarter they scored 25 points in 19 minutes,” he explained.

“When you look at the size of some of these human beings on the bench for France. Looking at [Georges-Henri] Colombe – he is an absolute monster. It allows them to be able to play so deep into the game. [Yoram] Moefana, he’s on the bench as a backline player – he could easily fit into anyone’s forward pack. Then you’ve got the likes of [Peato] Mauvaka as a hooker, he’s one of the most talented players in world rugby.

“And the largest human of the lot is that man there: [Romain] Taofifenua. His impact is remarkable, not just pushing in the scrum and at the line-out. He was also the scorer of one of their tries [against Wales]. Ultimately, when you look at them, he is a long-limbed lad – a very big lad, 6ft 8in, this is what they can do and take the game away from you.

“This is the challenge for England and when you compare the benches, France’s bench is 200kg heavier than England’s. I mean that is wild. People might say ‘size doesn’t matter’ but honey, I’m telling you, in rugby, it really does.”

Douglas then quipped: “It’s gone very x-rated here tonight hasn’t it?” Her words were met with laughter from Wilkinson, Monye and Kayser, who had to speak loudly just to be heard above the raucous crowd in Lyon.

The allure of the match was dampened slightly by Ireland’s 17-13 win over Scotland in Dublin ahead of kick-off. That result ensured the Six Nations title for Andy Farrell’s side and means France and England can only compete for second place.
