Mason Greenwood’s manager has demanded action after the Manchester United loanee was once again targeted with abuse from opposition fans.

Greenwood played the full 90 minutes as Getafe held Real Sociedad to a 1-1 draw in La Liga on Sunday. The draw was a creditable one for Getafe, but it was marred by abusive chanting from the away end.

Real Sociedad supporters were heard chanting abuse towards Greenwood. The 22-year-old forward joined Getafe on loan in the summer after United decided he could no longer continue his career with the club.

He was arrested in October 2022 and was subsequently charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Those charges were dropped in February 2023 by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Greenwood has continued his career in Spain, contributing eight goals and five assists in 30 appearances for Getafe this season, but has frequently been subjected to abuse. “I don't have much to say. It is unacceptable,” his manager, Jose Bordalas, said. “This is not the first time this has happened to us and we must take action. Like what happened in the game against Sevilla (when Getafe were punished).”

Bordalas was referring to what happened at Getafe’s 1-0 home defeat by Sevilla on March 30 when the away side’s left-back Marcos Acuna was racially abused from the stands. Getafe were initially handed a three-match partial stadium closure and fined €27,000 after the abusive words were heard from the home supporters, but after contesting the charges, the Spanish football federation’s appeals committee decided that Getafe should face no action.

Greenwood hasn’t just faced abuse from the stands – he was also involved in a clash with Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham in February. Getafe complained to La Liga after alleging that Bellingham had called Greenwood a “rapist” during a 2-0 win for Real Madrid on February 1.

Bellingham escaped punishment because it was deemed impossible to determine with 100 per cent accuracy whether Bellingham said “rapist” or “rubbish”. Greenwood is only on loan with Getafe until the end of the season, when a decision will have to be made over his future.

United have made it clear that he cannot continue his career there and are open to selling the young forward. Barcelona are among the clubs rumoured to be interested in signing him, but United have placed a £47million price tag on him.

Greenwood is understood to be happy playing in Spain and is open to completing a permanent move to the country in the summer transfer window. Getafe have six more La Liga matches until the end of the campaign on May 26.
