Armed police engaged in a tense stand-off with a half-naked man "covered in blood" in a seaside town for more than eight hours today.

Officers descended on a residential road in the Winton area of Bournemouth, after calls about the concern for the man's safety. They were first made at around 6am and remained at the scene with paramedics until he was finally detained at around 2.30pm.

Locals claimed the man was wearing nothing but his underpants and a pair of sunglasses, and had barricaded himself inside the address. Police said windows had been smashed at the property.

A spokesman for Dorset Constabulary told the Mirror: "Dorset Police received a report at 6.08am on Monday 22 April 2024 raising concern for the welfare of a man at an address in Markham Road in Bournemouth. It is reported that windows of a property were smashed and the man was in possession of a knife.

"Officers attended with the ambulance service and made efforts to engage with the man to resolve the situation safely. The road was closed to allow emergency services to deal with the incident. The man was detained at around 2.30pm and is being taken to hospital for treatment by the ambulance service. There was nobody else in the address."

Photographs show the man, covered in blood, as he hangs out a window of the property. One resident said: "He keeps appearing and shouting and then disappearing back into the house." Another resident said: "I've chatted to someone who lives in the area, and he said it's been going on since about 3am."

It is believed paramedics had been at the scene, and remained there for several hours. A Dorset Police spokesperson had, at around 2.30pm, said: "It is reported that windows of property were smashed, and the man was in possession of a knife.

"Officers are in attendance with the ambulance service and are making efforts to engage with the man to resolve the situation safely. The road has been closed to allow emergency services to deal with the incident."

Four police cars and two police vans are present, Bournemouth Echo reports. Winton is in the north of the town, a popular destination for tourists for its sandy beaches and Victorian architecture.
