HUW Edwards has left the BBC, the Corporation announced today.
The broadcaster said he resigned on "medical advice" and confirmed Edwards has not been paid off as part of his departure.
A BBC spokesperson said: "Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC.
"After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors.
"The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward.

"We don't believe it appropriate to comment further."
The presenter has not appeared on TV since July, when he was suspended on full pay over allegations he paid £35,000 to a young person who sent him explicit images.
Other complaints about his behaviour were subsequently reported by the BBC itself.
Newsnight reported claims from three BBC staff members, two current and one former, who said they had received "inappropriate messages" from Edwards.
Earlier this year the BBC apologised to the parents at the centre of the Sun's original revelations about the young person.
Their family hit out at the nine-month wait for the apology, saying it had "ripped them apart".
The mother said: "We've suffered immense pain and it has taken nearly a year which has left me broken.
"If the BBC had handled the complaint properly, we would have not had to go through this hell. We have been ripped apart as a family."
A damning 23-page independent report revealed the original complaint was not logged and was "escalated" to senior management only when The Sun got in touch.
The family had turned to us after accusing the BBC of failing to take seriously concerns over one of its biggest stars.

The Sun did not name Edwards as being the presenter involved in the scandal.
But, amid the fallout, Edwards' wife Vicky Flind named the father of five as the figure involved - as the BBC itself revealed the fresh claims about him.
She also announced that he was receiving hospital treatment for mental health issues.
Edwards was understood to have been suspended on full pay of £435,000 a year while the investigation took place.
