BROADCASTER Naga Munchetty has revealed the cruel abuse she suffers in the street from disgruntled BBC viewers.

The former Strictly contestant and Celebrity Mastermind winner, 49, admitted she gets told "she's crap" all the time but has learned to take it on the chin.

She shared the shocking revelation during a recording of Room 101 which will air this Wednesday.

When host Paul Merton told her that the late comedian Les Dawson was once told he was "crap", Naga said: "I get that all the time.

"Yeah, people who come up to me and go 'I can't stand you'.
"I think some people do love to hate."

She added: "I've chaired a conference, or chaired a panel discussion, and I remember being at one and this older gentleman - I say gentleman in the loosest sense of the word - came up to me and he said 'I really don't like you - you've got an opinion on everything haven't you? And you can never let something lie, I just don't like you.
"You don't make the mornings very pleasant to watch'."

Naga said that after the man had told her how much he couldn't stand her on TV, he complimented her for chairing a conference well.

Revealing how she decided to handle his criticism, she added: "I went 'Oh, ok'.

"And then he said 'but you were really good at that'."

Naga, who has presented her own show on Radio 5 Live and guest hosted Have I Got News For You, said she has also found that being scrutinised and trolled over her television attire comes with the territory.

She told the recording for the Radio 4 show that while her Breakfast show co-presenter Charlie Stayt also sometimes came in for criticism, it is not on the same scale, and men have an easier ride.

She told Merton: "I ignore them.

"Everyone's got different tastes. If someone feels the urge that they need to comment on what someone else's wearing and actually put it on a tweet, more fool them."

Adding that people even take the time to write critical letters, as well as commenting on social media, she continued: "There's only one time I've taken it on board and never worn an outfit again - well one and a half.

"The first time I wore this dress on Breakfast and it had kind of like a geometric print and two people said it was causing them migraines. But some things strobe, so you have to be mindful.

"So I said 'absolutely fine, I won't wear that again'. It was less they didn't like the dress, but it was causing migraines.

"And there was another one where I wore this brilliant dress - I still have it  - and it was black and it had all these eyes on it and two people emailed in saying it was scaring them and giving them nightmares.

"That one I have worn since, but I haven't worn it as much. I tend to wear it out more than on Breakfast.  Everyone's got a comment on what we wear.

"Charlie Stayt, it's his socks or his ties."

She argued that women are also expected to constantly wear new items, adding: "There was that test or experiment where a guy, I think it was Australia, wore the same suit, shirt, tie, combination every day for a year, no-one noticed.

"Then I think it was Nadia Sawalha, she was on Loose Women, and she wore the same outfit (four times) and everyone started commenting.
"If I wore an outfit one week after another even, someone would say 'Oh, have you run out of clothes?'."

Naga was referring to when Karl Stefanovic, a co-presenter on Australia Channel Nine’s Today show with Lisa Wilkinson, wore the same blue suit day in, day out, except for a few trips to the dry cleaners, to make the same point about the ways in which his female colleagues are judged.

He said after his experiment: “No one has noticed. No one gives a sh*t.”

Naga has in the past been accused of looking like she'd "come straight to work from a night out at a sleazy single's club" when she wore a grey silk dress, although other fans complimented the look.

She responded with humour on social media saying: "Sssssh... don't tell anyone. (btw - it's called a dress)."

Naga was born in south London and brought up by a mother from India and father from Mauritius who met at college while her mum was training to be a dentist and her dad to be a nurse.

Her first mainstream TV channel job was as a reporter for Channel 4 News before she joined the BBC finance show Working Lunch in 2008.
