A new mural, confirmed to be the work of street art superstar Banksy, has popped up overnight in London’s Finsbury Park.

The artwork, which adorns the side of a building, shows a splattering of green paint behind a leafless tree which looks like leaves. There is also a stencil of a woman holding a pressure hose nearby.

Banksy fans descended on the north London street on Monday to see the latest artwork for themselves, despite the fact that the artist had not officially taken responsibility for it yet.

“To my mind it looks like a dead cert,” said James Peak, the journalist who created the BBC Radio 4 series The Banksy Story. Peak, who was speaking to the BBC after rushing down to the site of the mural on Hornsey Road after receiving a tip-off, said he thought it was the real thing.

“But as ever with Banksy - you never quite know, until he fesses up by posting it on his website," he added. Banksy fans kept a close eye on his Instagram account where the artist usually posts pictures of recent artworks to confirm they are his. At 11.18am today (Monday March 18) Banksy put up a post claiming it as one of his.

Mr Peak said he thought it was the work of Banksy as it bore the “hallmarks” of the graffiti artist, namely, using a low-effort technique for maximum impact and the classic use of a stencil. The work's message, that nature is struggling and humanity must help it recover, is also typical of the secretive spray painter, Mr Peak claimed.

The artwork has been a hit with many locals. Islington Labour councillor Flora Williamson wrote on Twitter /X: 'By far the most exciting thing to happen on todays canvass session on hornsey road was seeing that Banksy had come to Tollington over night. Lots of local interest - I’m a fan of it.'

Meanwhile local resident Amy wrote on Twitter: “Proud new caretakers of an apparent new #Banksy piece in Finsbury Park… Woke up this morning to it on the side of the flat. You can just about see us smiling proudly on our balcony.”

However not everyone was so happy to have their neighbourhood visited by the famous artist. “Banksy came overnight and now my rent will skyrocket,” a resident called James said on Twitter.

The last time Banksy unveiled a piece of art in London it caused a scandal after thieves allegedly tried to make off with the vandalised road sign.

Two men were arrested for allegedly trying to steal the artwork, which showed three military drones added to a stop sign. The two men allegedly appeared at the scene of the artwork shortly after Banksy posted on social media claiming it as his and cut it down with bolt cutters before running off. They were later bailed.
