WE have all looked around our house or flat and thought about décor changes we would make or aesthetics we would like to try.

However, one of the biggest tasks you can undertake is decorating your home. It can also be an extremely expensive undertaking, with home décor and furniture taking a serious toll on your budget.

Whether you are looking to decorate your new home or just give your current home a refresh, there are great ways to save money on your decorating project.

Take the process slowly

As is the case in many areas of life, slow and steady wins the race when it comes to decorating your home.

We have all been in the process of decorating and decided to drive ahead with a couch or décor piece that we aren’t sure we love, only to regret it when we happen upon the couch of our dreams later on down the line.

While it is awfully tempting to try and get your dream home decorated as soon as possible, taking the process slowly and carefully can also help you save money on our decor.

This will allow you to make decisions carefully, avoiding impulse decisions and purchases.

Plus, this will help make sure that each and every item in your home is something you love!

Make a plan for your decor

A great tip for anything that you want to save money on is to make a plan.

It is quite easy to get distracted by flashy candle sticks or interesting art when you’re looking to buy decor for your home.

However, you can avoid unnecessary distractions or purchases by creating a plan for the items you are looking to buy when you go home decor shopping.

We recommend creating a detailed plan for the decor you want so that you have a specific, curated plan for your home.

A great tip is to create home inspiration boards for each room you are decorating so you can centre your attention on the items you need to bring your inspiration to life.

Upcycle items you already have

Before we buy something new, one way to save would be to repurpose or upcycle old items you already have.

Upcycling or repurposing can give items you already own a new life.

It can also make them feel like a new item for a fraction of the price.

Some easy ways to upcycle could be as simple as painting furniture or décor items you have to match a new colour scheme.

A great way to repurpose items is to use items like old dust-bins as plant pots.

Get rid of items you don’t use

Although it may seem counterintuitive to save money to get rid of items you own, an essential step to creating the home of your dreams is to get rid of items that don’t fit into your dream.

However, this step is also a great way to make some money, which you can then add to your home décor budget.

You can sell the items that you don’t need any more online or in person at some of the pre-owned marketplaces we mentioned earlier in the article.

Buy high-quality staple pieces

This is another tip that may seem counterintuitive to decorating on a budget, but hear us out.

While it is important to look for cheaper items and great deals, investing in big items for your home can be a great way of saving money down the line.

When you invest in good-quality staples for your home, it means that you won’t have to replace them as often as if you buy lower-quality furniture.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a great deal.

Some of the main UK furniture retailers have incredible deals and offers that can save you a lot of money on essential home furniture including couches, tables and beds.

Second-hand items

One of the absolute best things you can do for your budget when decorating your home is looking into second-hand decor.

While it is tempting to buy entirely new decor for your home, you can find extremely unique items in great condition when you search for second-hand furniture.

While seasoned thrifters will find the process easy, it can be intimidating to get started.

Some things to look out for damaged that can be repaired such as extreme staining, missing stuffing, water damage or burn marks.

It can also be difficult to find some places to find pre-loved furnishings, so here are some places to start.

Online marketplaces

Second-hand or pre-owned is a great, sustainable way to shop if you are interested in decorating on a budget while also doing your part for the planet.

It can also save you time, as there are tons of great online marketplaces where you can find your dream decor for very low prices or even free.

You can find great furniture and home decorations on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Etsy.

Car Boot Sales

If you prefer to shop in person, you can get some fabulous pre-owned furnishings at your local car boot sale.

Car boot sales are like local markets for private sellers to bring their unwanted clothes, shoes, accessories and more to sell.

You can get amazing deals on home decor essentials couches, chairs, desks, and tables. Seeing the furniture in person will also make it easier to ensure the quality of the item.

Simply look up your local car boot sales and spend your weekends searching for perfect pre-owned decor.

Swap Parties

Another super way to find pre-owned items for your home to host or attend a swap party.

Swap parties are when you and your friends come together to trade items you no longer need or want.

Swap parties will help you save while also helping you declutter.

Do it Yourself

Although it can be daunting to take on creating your own home décor, doing it yourself can be a great way to decorate for less.

Although creating furniture is probably outside the majority of our wheelhouses, most of us are capable of creating some great DIY décor.

Some relatively easy DIY projects for you to undertake include tile splashbacks, creating your own art, and planting some indoor plants.
