A woman has died in a fire that engulfed a house in south London.

Emergency services raced to the scene in Peckham as the fire ripped through the property on Sunday night, and a woman who was pulled from the building has now sadly died.

The blaze fire took place on Crane Street in Peckham, with London Fire Brigade called at 7.40pm. Firefighters used an internal staircase to bring the woman out of the building, and she was given immediate emergency care - but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Peckham, Old Kent Road, and New Cross fire station attended the scene. The fire was extinguished by 9.25pm and part of the first floor of an end-of-terrace house was damaged.

"One woman was rescued by breathing apparatus crews via an internal staircase. She was given immediate emergency care by firefighters and London Ambulance Service but was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The Brigade was called at 7.40pm and the fire was extinguished by 9.25pm. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Peckham, Old Kent Road and New Cross fire station attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service."

The tragedy came less than 48 hours after another fatal blaze around two miles away in Railton Road in Herne Hill. A police probe has been launched after a fire tore through a flat in a tower block on Saturday night. One person has been confirmed to have died in the fire with police currently investigating the circumstances.

“Firefighters found a person in the living room who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene,” said LFB in a statement. It added that “most” of a two-room flat on the second floor of the block was damaged by fire.
