IRISH actor Emmet Bergin, best known for his iconic role in Glenroe, has tragically passed away.

The former RTE star died suddenly on Friday March 15, 2024 surrounded by loved ones.

Emmet was best known for his iconic role as heartthrob Dick Moran on RTE's hit soap Glenroe.

Bergin landed the role of Dick back in 1983 and remained on the show until its last episode in 2001.

The heart-throb of the show, Dick Moran, was the local suave solicitor.

Dick married Biddy’s mother Mary, but his wandering eye storylines seemed to always get him into trouble.

After Glenroe ended in 2001, Emmet went on to play the role of Aengus Fanning in the biographical crime film about journalist Veronica Guerin.

The Dublin man was also well known for playing the role of Ulfus in the fantasy film Excalibur, back in 1981.

Bergin also voiced numerous radio advertisements for The Irish Times in the 1980s and also starred in a few episode of the RTE drama The Clinic.

Emmet's brother Patrick Bergin is also a famous Irish actor, starring in Eastenders and alongside A-lister Julia Roberts in Sleeping With The Enemy.

Paying tribute to his beloved brother, he said: "Sharing the sad passing of our brother Emmet who was an inspiration and a great man. Love you Emmet. RIP."

RTE star Emmet is survived by his wife Sarah and his children, Gavan and Tara, who said he died "suddenly but peacefully at home".

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, March 26 at Victorian Chapel, Mount Jerome Crematorium, in Harold’s Cross, Dublin.

Announcing his death, Emmet's family said: "Dearly beloved husband and best friend of Sarah and loving dad to Gavan and Tara.

"He will be very sadly missed by his wife, son, daughter, son-in-law Alan, his cherished grandson Jack, sister Siobhán, brothers Pat, Pearse and Allen, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

"Emmet will be reposing on Monday evening from 5pm to 7pm in Carnegies Funeral Home, Monkstown.

"A service to celebrate Emmet’s life will be held on Tuesday March 26 at 3.15pm in the Victorian Chapel, Mount Jerome Crematorium, Harold’s Cross."
