RANGERS will face Manchester United in a glamour pre-season friendly at Murrayfield this summer.

The Old Trafford side will 'host' the Ibrox men at Scottish Gas Murrayfield, Edinburgh, on Saturday July 20.

The match - which will kick off at 4pm on the day - comes at a key time in the pre-season preparations for Philippe Clement's men and also at Old Trafford, where Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Dave Brailsford are bidding to overhaul Man Utd's first team.

It appears likely that Erik ten Hag's men will miss out on the Champions League spots - and there's fresh speculation this morning that the Old Trafford men could even turn to England coach Gareth Southgate as a replacement.

United are making the return journey north of the border after a successful trip last summer.

A goal from Donny van de Beek saw the Reds claim a single-goal victory over Lyon in front of 48,000 fans.

The connection between the two sides is well-established, through the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson - who played for the Ibrox men before writing his name into the history books at Old Trafford.

Illustrious Rangers boss Walter Smith also had a stint at Old Trafford as Ferguson's assistant - with Archie Knox providing great service as an assistant to both clubs.

The sides have met in competitive action just four times - most recently in the 2010-11 Champions League.

Smith was in charge back then, and the Ibrox men performed creditably in both matches - getting a Champions League point from a goalless Old Trafford draw then going down to a late Wayne Rooney penalty in the return match at Ibrox.

Prior to that, the two sides had met in the 2003-04 Champions League group stages.

Alex McLeish's side went down 3-0 to Ferguson's men at Old Trafford, then lost 1-0 at Ibrox.
