Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has paid for the funeral of a football player from his hometown who was tragically killed.

Jarvon Coles, 18, played for North Shore Senior High School as a linebacker and had plans to attend Lamar University before he was shot at a house party. Hurts, 25, decided to cover the funeral costs after hearing about Coles' death.

Hurts also sent a special message to Coles' family, which was played at the funeral on March 16. The funeral was held at Humble's Light of the World Christian Fellowship Church and was attended by hundreds who knew "Veezy", as Coles was affectionately known.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston Mayor John Whitmire also acknowledged the occasion by declaring it "Jarvon Coles Day". Just a few days before the funeral, many people gathered at Galena Park ISD Stadium to release balloons in his memory.

This stadium holds special memories for Eagles star Hurts too, as he played there during his high school football career and even made history in 2014 when he became the first Channelview quarterback to beat North Shore thanks to a last-second Hail Mary.

The two-time Pro Bowler has not publicly commented on his gesture, which was reported by NFL Network, but North Shore is grateful for the help he's given to their player's family.

Coles' family have paid tribute to the late football player and the support they've received. "You always think yours is special, but he was really special," his grandfather Braxton Coles said via KPRC 2. "You don’t realize it until other people tell you. And, you know, through this tragedy, it’s been such an outpouring of love from the community, from everywhere, really all over the country to show that he was that kid."

Coles' father Jarvis Payne told KPRC 2: "[He was] an excellent child, no trouble. [He was] smart. He was fixing to graduate and go to prom."

His former head coach Jon Kay paid tribute to Coles to the Chronicle. "Jarvon was the epitome of Texas high school football," the now Rice University linebackers coach recalled. "He loved the game and played it with a passion that showed whenever he stepped on the field. He competed in the classroom as much as he competed on the field."

Kay continued: "He will always be my ‘gold standard’ when it comes to recognizing a true student-athlete. He touched more lives than he will ever know."

An investigation into the killing remains ongoing as the suspects remain at large, with no arrests made yet.
