A detective working on the Madeleine McCann case is to give evidence in the prime suspect’s trial over unrelated sex crimes.
Det Con Mark Draycott has worked on Operation Grange, the £13million probe into the case, since it was launched by then Home Secretary Theresa May in 2011. Judge Christina Engelmann confirmed DC Draycott will give evidence in the trial of convicted German paedophile Christian Brueckner.
In 2020, he was named by German prosecutors as the key suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance. Brueckner’s former friend Helge Busching had tipped off Scotland Yard about him in 2017.
He claimed Brueckner told him “she did not scream” when the pair discussed Madeleine’s disappearance. DC Draycott was part of a Met Police team who later flew to Athens to quiz Mr Busching in a secret meeting.
Earlier this month, Mr Busching gave evidence in Brueckner’s trial over allegations of unrelated sex crimes in Germany. He told Braunschweig regional court that he saw videos of Brueckner raping a pensioner and a teenage girl.

Brueckner, 47, is on trial accused of carrying out a string of sex attacks in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.
Madeleine, aged three, had been on a family holiday in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, when she vanished in May 2007. Brueckner denies any involvement in the youngster’s disappearance.
