An "amazing" grandfather was killed while putting up a 20-foot flagpole in his garden, an inquest heard.

Father-of-three Ian Roberts was setting the pole up as a surprise for his wife. However, the pole came into contact with the overhead electricity lines, and he sadly died from electrocution.

The 69-year-old was hoping to fly the Union Jack and red dragon of Wales at home in Anglesey. But the inquest heard the former football referee died in the electrocution tragedy when the flagpole touched the cable running across the island.

Speaking at the time, his heartbroken wife Julie said: "It’s with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have to tell all of our friends that yesterday my amazing husband passed away. Ian was loved and respected by so many people we are deeply shocked by his sudden passing."

After the incident, Ian "passed away tragically at his home". He was described as the "beloved husband of Julie, loving father of Jamie, Adam, Kerry and Roxy the dog. Proud taidy to all his grandchildren."

The fun-loving Ian and hairdresser Julie were well-known locally for throwing large Halloween parties and turning their home into a house of horrors. The couple had returned home from a dream holiday to the USA just days before his death, when Ian decided to rig up the flagpole.

North West Wales coroner Kate Robertson heard he was putting up the flagpole as a surprise for his wife. He was found facedown in the garden with burn marks on his hands.

She said: ”It’s likely he was making attempts to erect that flagpole when it came into contact with overhead electrical cables."
