The late Queen and Meghan's wedding bouquets had one big thing in common.
Queen Elizabeth was a lifelong lover of horticulture and one flower in particular played a huge part in her life.
She included it in her Coronation in 1953 and also had it in her bouquet when she married Prince Phillip in 1947. When he died in 2021, they were used to decorate the church in a nod to their wedding, and when the Queen died a year later, the blooms featured heavily at her funeral.
It is, of course, the lily of the valley. They have also been a favourite for royal wedding bouquets over the years, with the Queen Mother, Princess Eugenie, Queen Camilla, and Princess Kate all carrying them on their wedding days. And Meghan also chose them for her wedding when she married Prince Harry at St George's Chapel in Windsor in 2018.
Meanwhile, King Charles is also a huge fan of flowers. Charles's biggest passion is gardening and organic farming. The royal has spent decades working away on his gardens at Highgrove House, incorporating sustainable methods into his design for them, and since taking the throne has introduced a new climate-friendly topiary garden in his Norfolk residence, Sandringham. Despite his keen interest in all manner of growing plants, trees and crops, there is one flower that he has admitted is his absolute favourite variety - and it's absolutely stunning.
Meghan Markle 'to unleash her own memoirs' as Prince Harry's drops next weekCharles revealed that his absolute favourite flower is the suitably majestic delphinium - which produces richly colourful towering floral spikes. "For me, the magnificent, gloriously apparelled delphinium, with its impeccable bearing and massed in platoons, holds pride of place in my botanical affections," Charles said, when the Covid-19 lockdown that meant the Chelsea Flower Show could not take place in person.
Meanwhile, his sister Princess Anne revealed that of all the flowers out there, hellebores come top of the list for her. "Not only do they flower early but they keep flowering for two months, and they are often beautifully marked with endless variations." Anne also shared a photo she had taken herself of two varieties of hellebores dappled in sunlight with the virtual Chelsea Flower Show.
When asked to name her favourite, Camilla, opted for a foliage plant that elevates any bed, Alchemilla mollis, explaining: "This acid green, fluffy-flowered plant is one of the best ever foliage plants for the garden and the vase. A must for every gardener." Prince Edward and Sophie submitted azaleas as their favourite blooms citing their gorgeous fragrance as the reason these colourful flowers topped their list.
The Duke of Gloucester confessed that the humble daisy is his favourite, and admitted he would on occasion dig the simple flower from his garden as gifts for his pals. The Duchess of Gloucester's favourite is the vibrant sweet pea, and she also revealed that she even made the wicker trellis she uses for the climbers in her garden herself.
