Sven-Goran Eriksson admits he "appreciates waking up in the morning and feeling normal" following his cancer diagnosis just two months ago.
The former England boss, now 76, was told he had terminal pancreatic cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in Sweden. Eriksson's perspective around his life and his health have clearly changed after he was dealt the heartbreaking news.
Back in January the former Lazio and Manchester City boss was told he had around 12 months to live but he's since come to terms with the news and has set about trying to enjoy each day - not worrying about what's around the corner.
He told Channel 4: "You appreciate waking up in the morning and feeling well and normally you don't do that. You take it for granted. In the beginning when you get the diagnosis coming from nowhere, it’s like a shock but after a while you learn to live with it."
The Swede went on to say: "Today I have a normal life and I am not thinking about what's going to happen tomorrow or the day after. Otherwise you sit down and think pity of yourself. No. Leave it. I don’t talk about it very much. It is what it is. I can’t beat it, probably. Anyhow, life is beautiful."
Sarah Ferguson shares poem for Queen, saying her 'dearest friend' is now 'free'Eriksson will get the chance to live out a dream and stand in the Anfield dugout this weekend to take charge of the Liverpool legends when they face the Ajax legends on Merseyside. The Swede is a Liverpool fan and confessed recently they were a club he'd loved to have managed.
He'll get the chance to do so for a day and will be able to reunite with Steven Gerrard, whom he worked with during his time with the Three Lions. Whilst Eriksson was at the helm with England he reached three successive quarter-finals before departing in 2006.
He was undone by Brazil at the World Cup in 2002 before Portugal thwarted England in 2004 and then again 2006 - both times on penalties as Eriksson was unable to undo the English curse from the spot.
The Swede's English connection previously meant he got to sit next to the late Queen at a lunch. The iconic monarch passed away in September 2022 at the age of 96 and admitted to Eriksson that she didn't really like football, unlike her grandson, Prince William, who is a huge Aston Villa fan.
