With sky-high energy bills over the winter, homeowners have been reluctant to turn on the heating - even during the coldest months.

Though being mindful of your gas bill can save you money, the extra humidity can increase the risk of damp and mould in your home.

It’s become such a problem that the NHS has warned that black mould can lead to some serious health issues including: respiratory infections, allergies and asthma.

Rather than buying expensive dehumidifiers to get rid of mould, you can actually tackle the issue with a bargain buy from B&M.

The nifty tip came after one Facebook user revealed that they’d been struggling with black mould in their home, which covered the walls in their upstairs bedroom.

Sharing a photo in the Diy On A Budget group, they explained: “We seem to have a little bit of a damp problem in our upstairs bedroom. I am in the process of cleaning it with mould cleaner but what would be the cause…is this something I could sort myself?”

Thankfully others in the group had plenty of suggestions about how to tackle the household nuisance.

Keen to help the homeowner out, one wrote: “Elbow Grease Mould and Mildew Remover is amazing for this and it's only £1.99 in B&M!”

According to the B&M product description, the bargain buy is ‘the only cleaner you'll ever need’ thanks to it’s ‘new and improved formula’.

There’s no need to scrub with the Elbow Grease spray either, as you simply need to apply it and leave for 10-15 minutes before wiping away with a damp, clean sponge.

Others also recommend the tried and tested HG mould spray, claiming that it was the ‘best stuff’ if you couldn’t get your hands on the B&M buy.

Another user commented: “I used HG mould remover yesterday cleared it better than Astonish mould and mildew I used last time.”

There was one drawback with the HG spray though, with the Facebook user warning: “Just watch clothing especially black items I had a few red spots from drips when doing the ceiling.”

Some also suggested altenative ways to get rid of excess mould in the original poster’s home as well as using a high-quality mould spray.

A third explained: “It’s lack of ventilation causing condensation! Use an anti-condensation paint after cleaning off with a good mould and mildew spray.

“Once you find the issue & sort it don't keep furniture so close to walls in that corner. Pull [them] slightly away from walls/ corner.”

With the weather warming up over the next few months, now is a great time to tackle any black mould in your home – especially as the higher temperature mean it won’t come back as quickly.

If you are still struggling with mould, it’s also a good idea to open your windows and let fresh, dry air circulate around your home.
