The brother of the late-Princess Diana has praised Kate Middleton's "strength and poise" as she announced to the world she had been treated for cancer.

The Princess of Wales made a shock statement on Friday at 6pm, revealing her abdominal surgery in January had revealed the presence of cancer, and that she had undergone a course of chemotherapy. The news followed weeks of wild speculation and even conspiracy theories surrounding the 42-year-old's health, throughout which she has previously remained silent.

Charles Spencer, who is Prince William's uncle, took to X, formerly Twitter, sharing the video statement posted on the KensingtonRoyal account. Reposting the announcement, he commented: "Incredible strength and poise."

In her statement on Friday, Kate said:“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.

She added she was well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits . The Princess said: “We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.

“At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”

Charles, who is 9th Earl Spencer, was also praised for his own bravery earlier this month after he revealed he had experienced sexual abuse as a child. The 59-year-old, claimed in his book, A Very Private School, that he had been abused while at elite boarding school Maidwell Hall School.

In an extract from the memoir, which was serialised in the Mail on Sunday, Earl Spencer detailed the sexual assaults and beatings he suffered at the Northamptonshire school, leaving him with lifelong "demons". He says he was abused by a staff member at the school when he was 11, leaving him with such trauma that he self-harmed over the notion she may leave the school.

Earl Spencer writes: "There seemed to be an unofficial hierarchy among her prey... she chose one boy each term to share her bed and would use him for intercourse. Her control over mesmerised boys was total, for we were starved of feminine warmth and desperate for attention and affection."
