AN Antiques Roadshow guest was left shocked over the current value of a watch he hasn't worn in 50 years.

The latest episode of the BBC show saw a male guest bring in a Submariner Rolex timepiece to be assessed by the team of experts.

Richard Price quickly picked up on a unique element of the watch that added value to it.

He told the man it has a single line of red text printed on it known as a "red sub", which all current collectors are looking out for.

Although the guest has owned the watch since 1971, he hasn't touched the item since 1974, when it nearly caused a terrible injury for him.

He went on to explain: "I used to do a lot of skydiving and I got into the habit of wearing the watch on the outside of my jumpsuit."

During one dive in particular, he jumped out of the plane and raised his arms, but his watch caught on part of the aircraft.

This meant he got yanked back up towards the plane.

The watch strap was damaged during the incident, and after getting such a fright, he decided not to wear it anymore.

He added: "It just went into a cupboard and it's stayed there ever since."

When Richard enquired about the original price of the item, he revealed that it only cost him £174.50.

"How many noughts do we have to put on to make it up to £17,000?" the expert asked with a twinkle in his eye.

The guest was left open-mouthed after hearing the current price the watch could fetch.

Richard went on to ask: "Are your family all happy do you think?"

He joked: "Well it's their inheritance, not mine!" as they laughed in the background.
