This Specsavers van driver really should have gone to Specsavers - after getting his vehicle stranded on top of a bollard.

Motorists and pedestrians in Edinburgh city centre were amused to see the mishap on Saturday night. Aidan McNelis, 45, was visiting Edinburgh for the weekend when he spotted the unusual sight.

The vehicle had been lifted up by a submerged bollard and had its hazard lights on to warn other road users. A sign next to it stated: "CAUTION. Automatic bollards in operation. NO PARKING."

Dad-of-three Aidan, a software developer from Galway, Ireland, posted it on Twitter with the caption: "Should have gone to... Oh, wait." Aidan was visiting his student daughter in the city when he took the snap on Saturday evening on Castle Street.

He said: "It was fantastic, I was delighted to come across it. I looked for damage so I don't think anyone could have got hurt. I'm sure there would have been an awkward conversation at work for the driver though!

"Around the corner from there, all the bus stops had Specsavers adverts on them, and then you see their van on a bollard... you couldn't make it up."

But Daily Record can reveal that the "parking blunder" was actually part of an advertising stunt by the optical giant. Viewers were left in hysterics after being fooled by the driver's alleged mishap. One wrote: "Omg eye test needed me thinks." Another added: "Should have gone to Specsavers." A third posted: "We passed this on the bus. The poor guy was so confused."

A fourth wrote: "Bet he feels like a right bollard". And a fifth commented: "That’s certainly one way to display the van!" Specsavers have been contacted for comment.

It comes after a mum who had blurred vision and assumed she had something in her eye was devastated to be diagnosed with multiple sclerosis - but said she is determined to live life to the full.

When Emily Topham, 26, struggled to see for several days, she underwent vision tests, only to be told her symptom was a result of damage to her optic nerve at the back of her right eye. She was quickly referred for an MRI in hospital, which confirmed she had the autoimmune condition Multiple Sclerosis (MS). MS, a lifelong condition with no cure, lowers life expectancy slightly, can cause permanent disability and weaken the immune system.
