Liverpool will be back in action this weekend as they host Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.

They currently sit second in the table, with just one point separating Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. The Reds have already lifted the Carabao Cup this season and are desperate to win some more silverware with manager Jurgen Klopp set to step down at the end of the campaign.

The search for his successor remains ongoing and there are a number of candidates being considered for the vacancy. With that being said, here are all the latest updates on developments on Merseyside.

Alonso latest

According to the Daily Mail, former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso is the No 1 candidate to replace Klopp having done an impressive job as Bayer Leverkusen boss.

However, Bayern Munich are also interested in the Spaniard and the report states that the Reds are ready to 'do battle' with the German giants. Liverpool have been reluctant to make direct contact with candidates while the season is ongoing, but they may have to change their approach.

The report states that the club now believe they 'must step up their search soon' as they risk losing out to their rivals. Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are leading the search for Klopp's following their recent appointments as CEO of football and sporting director respectively.

Walker hails Trent

Manchester City star Kyle Walker has heaped praise on Trent Alexander-Arnold, stating that the right-back is perfect for the way Liverpool play.

"Trent is a quarterback at right-back," Walker said in an appearance on Rio Ferdinand's Vibe with Five podcast. "I've never seen anyone pass the ball like it. Left, right foot, snow on it when it needs to have snow on it, or ping straight to the chest.

"The wayLiverpoolplay where it's very transitional, German manager, it's a process to get up to the goal [for us], but Liverpool are very direct with their football. I'm not saying it's a long ball team. But when you've got Salah on the right-hand side and you're whipping that ball down his right-hand side, that's what Trent's very, very good at."

Carvalho addresses future

Fabio Carvalho has spoken out about his Liverpool future, with the 21-year-old currently impressing on loan at Championship promotion challengers Hull.

When asked what the future holds for him, Carvalho told A Bola : "Yes! I'm going back [to Liverpool] in pre-season." He also opened up about working with Klopp, adding: "It was good. He helped me. But when I arrived at the club, we were in a very difficult period, on and off the field.

"There were problems with the team and he needed to turn to the players he trusted most. I had just arrived and he didn't have the greatest confidence in me, but he always helped me a lot and pointed out what I needed to do better and what I shouldn't do."
