Minds were blown when people realised the truth about a 'hidden' fridge hole - and you might want to check yours out pronto.

It turns out that despite being one of the most regularly used rooms in your home, the kitchen still has some surprises in store for you. You might think you know everything there is to know about your fridge, but it turns out that many people had no idea whatsoever that their appliance does more than just chill and store your food.

A secret hole inside fridges that fills up with dirt and slime has left people online completely shocked, as they had no idea they were supposed to be cleaning it out regularly.

Content creator Chloe posted her discovery on her TikTok account - @thesimplemum - and it quickly wracked up nearly 50,000 likes and hundreds of comments from other users who also hadn't realised this was a feature of their fridges.

"I can't be the only person who didn't know you had to clean this hole in your fridge," the content creator said, pointing out the tiny hole in the rear of her appliance.

"I've been getting puddles of water down here for weeks," Chloe explained, indicating the bottom of her fridge - where you normally have fruit and vegetable drawers - in the video.

Warning: Strong language in the video below.

"I thought my seal or something was on its way out, and I just Googled it and it's this little hole. The condensation drips down, and this gets filled with slime and dirt and s**t. Don't forget to clean your hole," she advised her followers.

Many other users were just as surprised as she was, with one commenting: "Took me ages to follow the smell and find my hole."

One user wrote, "I'm 56 years old and I just found this out a couple of weeks ago," and another agreed, noting: "What? How have I got to 45 and not known this?"

In a follow-up video, the content creator explained how she had cleaned out this part of her fridge, and advised using a cotton bud on the outside edge and entrance to wipe away any slime, and then said you could use a wire or straw to clean the internal part of the hole - or a pipe cleaner will work just as well.

These days fridges often will come with a cleaning attachment for this feature, and if in doubt about the best approach, you should always opt to read the manufacturer's instruction manual thoroughly for best practices for your appliance.
