MASTERCHEF fans feel like this series has gone from the frying pan into the fire as show bosses introduced a new twist.

The most recent episode of the cooking competition saw five former contestants brought back to try again for a chance at the final.

Most of them previously made it to the quarter or semi-finals before receiving a searing rejection from the judges.

Farokh, Lyndsay, Matthew, Chris and Mary claim that their skills have improved since they last competed and are aiming to impress John Torode and Gregg Wallace this time around.

Comeback Week will then continue on May 2 as another five hopefuls enter the arena after having been axed from MasterChef before.

Viewers have already been complaining about how unskilled this year's batch of cooks are.

And the change in format has made some question just how bad the current cast must be for former losers to be allowed back on the show.

One person hit out on social media, saying: "They must be desperate inviting previous contestants back. I personally don't agree with it if they didn't make it the first time."

Another agreed, joking: "I knew the standard this year wasn’t so great but didn’t realise it was bring back previous rejects - not great."

A third scoffed: "What’s happening to MasterChef? Clearly run out of ideas not enough contenders so bringing back five losers! That’s just hopeless."

One confused viewer asked: "Not understanding why previous contestants [on] MasterChef from years ago are suddenly back in this year's competition....they don't seem to have any connection with the current competition/series. Can someone explain what's happening."

Someone else fumed: "I’m the biggest MasterChef fan going but even I’m not sure about this. They had their chance, they left the competition which is a once in a lifetime chance usually. I know the standard isn’t great this year so is that why? Doesn’t seem fair to me though."

Only three of the former rejects made it through to the next round, with Farokh and Lyndsay facing the same fate they did last time they went on the BBC programme.

Lyndsay said it felt bittersweet to go home, but Farokh held her head high, saying: "I am who I am. I will never be a chef, but I will always be an experimental cook."

Meanwhile Matthew, Chris, and Mary will all have a shot at the quarter-finals alongside this year's new contestants.
