The famed Playboy mansion is being renovated, and partially rebuilt, on the same property.
The gorgeous grotto and backyard where Hugh Hefner thew some of the best parties in Los Angeles will be home to a mostly new mansion to restore the land to its former glory. The construction process hasn't been easy as it's taken over four years to complete — and still counting. In fact, the property was purchased about seven years ago.
Architect Richard Landry was tasked with completely redoing the home with a $10million renovation. It's set to include some aspects of the original with a bit of modernization. Arial photos reveal the progress being made, much of which seems to be unfinished. Nonetheless, the pictures give a glimpse into the lavish and luxe home.

This build was described as a "subterranean addition to an existing three-story, single family dwelling," by documents filed to the Los Angeles Department of City Planning. The staff house partially demolished to build a 4,400 sq. ft. addition which included a gym and a garage. The kitchen, family room, bathrooms, and a powder room are also getting a do-over. The permits, obtained by the Daily Mail, specify that more natural light will be let into the home with some new skylights.
The mansion appears to be in two parts with a main home and what appears to be a guest house of some sort. The overall architecture exudes glitz, glam and old-fashioned castle-like aesthetics.
In the backyard, which is still being landscaped and fleshed out, is a huge swimming pool. The gardens appear to still be in the works as exposed soil litters the land, but large hedges seal in the area like a fence.
Entrepreneur Daren Metropoulos, who lives next door to the estate, snatched up the property when it went on sale and wants to combine the two properties. He told the Daily Mail: "Hugh Hefner was a visionary in business, a giant in media and an iconic figure of pop culture whose legacy will leave a lasting impact."
His purchase came in 2016, before Hugh's death. The Playboy owner was allowed to live in the home until he died at age 91 just one year later. Only a few years later, Daren decided it was time for the home to get makeover.
